THE STORY
Mekha Aranya
Mekha Aranya means Cloud Forest. The name leads to Mhom, a creature of Lanna folklore from northern Thailand, often seen guarding temple stairways. Its appearance changes from place to place: part cat, part lion, or a mixture of several animals. The fragrance follows the story of this creature returning to the heavens, using a single flower with several different facets to bring its changing form to mind.
In the legend, Mhom serves Patchunna, the deity of clouds and rain. After descending to earth and becoming carried away by its own strength, it cannot return to heaven. It must guard Buddhist temples and listen to the teachings until it can let go of its pride. The cloud forest is the home it hopes to reach again, and the setting for the fragrance.
Aldehyde gives the opening a bright, airy feeling before osmanthus absolute comes into focus. Osmanthus has more to offer than a soft floral smell. Its character includes fruit-like nuances and a subtle leathery side, making it a fitting choice for a creature assembled from different forms. Honey adds body and warmth, while leaving some of the opening's lightness around the flower.
Leather, musk and sandalwood make the later stages smoother and fuller. Leather develops a facet already present in osmanthus, and the musk and wood bring a gentle warmth beneath it. The flower remains easy to recognise as its surroundings change. What starts in bright, open air gradually becomes softer, with honey and wood close around the petals. This gives the cloud forest a welcoming warmth, as the story of Mhom's journey home quietly stays with the scent.
